Johnson wins second straight consolation title at nationals

Box Score TUCSON, Arizona – For the second consecutive season, Jones College's Allie Johnson (Hernando) has won a national championship.
 
Johnson won the consolation round of No. 4 singles in the NJCAA Division I Tournament here Tuesday at the Reffkin Tennis Center. Johnson defeated Taji Williams of Coastal Alabama-South in the final, 8-1. 
 
Last year, Johnson won the No. 6 singles consolation round title.
 
Teamwise, the Bobcats ended up with 15 points and finished 13th in the tournament.
 
Johnson made an excellent run through the backdraw to win her title.
 
She lost to Natalia Diaz Sanchez of South Carolina-Sumter in the opening round, 4-6, 0-6. Johnson then defeated Adele Hutton 8-1 of College of Lake County (Illinois) in the consolation round quarterfinals. Johnson then beat Meridian's Sarah Cline 8-1 in the semifinals before beating Williams in the finals on Tuesday.
 
Sarah Powell (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) advanced all the way to the finals in the No. 3 singles consolation round before falling. 
 
Powell lost to Martina Paillett of Wallace St. (Alabama) in round one, 6-3, 1-6, 2-6. She defeated Tamara Velasquez of Iowa Central in the consolation round quarterfinals, 8-1. Powell beat Emma Pager of Coastal Alabama-South in the semifinals, 8-0. She lost 2-8 to Alexia Csibi of Eastern Arizona in the finals.
 
In No. 1 doubles, Mia Höddinghaus (Germany) and Powell lost to Mann-Ling Li and Larissa Correa of Collin County (Texas) 7-5, 6-7, 3-6 in the opening round. They then defeated Kasey Kent and Tanyaradzwa Kaome of Mississippi Gulf Coast 8-2 in the consolation round quarterfinals. Höddinghaus and Powell fell 3-8 to No. 8 seeded Michelle Markovic and Anastasia Khrustaleva of Weatherford College (Texas) in the consolation round semifinals.
 
In No. 2 doubles, Addy Seward (Richland) and Michaela Anderson (Tupelo) defeated Brenna Wallen and Kendra Farrell of Mesa College (Arizona) 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. They lost to No.3 seeded Kelly Arends and Abigail Wild of Tyler Junior College (Texas) in round two, 0-6, 1-6. 
 
In No. 3 doubles, Johnson and Sophie Endt (Vancleave) beat Williams and Emma Speaks of Coastal Alabama-South in round one, 6-2, 6-1. They lost to No. 6 seeded Sarah Forsyth and Luna Mouton of State College of Florida in round two, 1-6, 2-6.
 
Höddinghaus defeated Lucy Ann Taffner of Mercer County (New Jersey) in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 in her opening match. She then lost to No. 1 seeded Lauren Anzalotto of Tyler, 6-1, 0-6, 0-6.
 
In No. 2 singles, Seward beat Blakely Valdez of Central Alabama in the first round, 6-2, 6-1. She lost to No. 4 seeded Carol Mora of Seward County (Kansas) in round two, 0-6, 3-6.
 
Endt fell to Halley McCrory of Wallace St. (Alabama) 6-7 (7-3), 1-6 in the first round of No. 5 singles. She defeated Kate Jackson of College of Lake County 8-1 in the consolation round quarterfinals. Endt lost to Mississippi Gulf Coast's Abigail Garman 7-9 in the semifinals.
 
In No. 6 singles, Reagan Salter (Lewisburg) beat Olivia Haynie of Eastern Arizona in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. She lost to No. 4 seed Jimena Ramirez of Seward County in round two, 0-6, 0-6.
 
The Bobcat men's team begins play May 16 in the NJCAA Division I Tournament in Tyler, Texas.
