Hanna Zeitz allowed one earned run in a complete game win in the opener and
Nia Luckett went the distance in the nightcap as No. 5 Jones swept at rival Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday night.
Jones, winners of 15 of 17 against the Bulldogs, improved to 28-7 overall and 16-2 in the MACCC. The Bulldogs fell to 18-19, 10-8 in league play.
With No. 1 Co-Lin's loss to East Central, Jones is just one game back of first in the conference standings. The winner of the regular season hosts the conference tournament May 4-7.
Jones hosts Coahoma in a 2 o'clock doubleheader on Friday at The Bank.
Jones 8, Gulf Coast 3
Sydney Pevey went yard twice and
Lauren Lindsey and
Lindsay Henson each homered as Jones cruised to a game one win.
Jones led 4-0 in the third on Pevey's solo shot, Henson's two-run homer and RBI-double for
Tia'Rain Saunders.
Gulf Coast cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI-singles from Abby Vance and Darcy Novak.
Pevey's three-run shot to left-center in the sixth extended the Bobcat lead back to 7-2 and Lindsey then smashed one to straight-away center to make it 8-2 Jones.
Lindsey finished 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack.
Carly Lewis also added two hits.
Jones 9, Gulf Coast 8
Jones jumped ahead with a six-run fourth but had to hold off a bases-loaded bottom of the seventh to earn the sweep.
Gulf Coast led 2-0 after three frames.
Carly Lewis' RBI-double helped start the six-run inning.
Sarah Ballard singled to tie the game, two wild pitches made it 4-2 and Henson doubled to score Lindsey all the way from first to make it 6-2 Jones.
The Bulldogs immediately clawed back to 6-5. KK Agner and Jovi Jones singled with one out before a pair of two-out errors let three runs score.
Henson's RBI-single and Lewis' RBI-double extended the lead to 9-5 after six.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the seventh to pull within 9-8 before a strikeout and pop up with the bases loaded ended the game.
