ELLISVILLE – Jones College posted a pair of wins over Bevill State (Alabama) here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Dalton Tanner (Northeast Jones) and
Drew Druckenmiller (Mobile, Alabama) limited the Bears to five hits in a 2-1 victory in game one. In game two, Jones scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to a 12-6 win.
The Bobcats, 8-2, travel to Mobile, Alabama, to meet Spring Hill Junior Varsity in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday. Jones hosts Baton Rouge in a 2 p.m. twinbill on Saturday.
Bevill St., 5-11, goes to Stillman College Junior Varsity on Monday.
Game 1 – Jones 2, Bevill State 1
Jones took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Billy Garrity (Sumrall) doubled and
Colson Harris (West Jones) drove him home with a two-out single to left.
The Bears tied it in the top of the sixth when Josh Davis singled, Zac Durham walked and Wesley Marchman's two-out single scored Harris.
The Bobcats pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
Kade Keeton (Brandon) led off with a single.
Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) had a sacrifice bunt and the ball was thrown away, sending Keeton to third.
Murray Hutchinson's (Madison Central) sacrifice fly to right scored Keeton.
Tanner tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk. He had four strikeouts. Druckenmiller went 1.2 innings and got the win, upping his record to 3-0. He gave up two hits, walked none and struck out one.
Garrity doubled with Harris, Keeton and
Josh Cary (Petal) adding singles.
Brody Cook, 0-2, took the tough-luck loss for the Bears. He retired the first 12 batters he faced until Garrity's double in the fifth. He gave up two runs (one earned), four hits, walked none and struck out one. Griffin Busby finished the final .2 innings and gave up a walk.
Rye McGothlin doubled for Bevill St. with Davis, Marchman, D.J. Leathers and John Miller Lawson adding singles.
Game 2 – Jones 12, Bevill State 6
The Bobcats sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of four walks and three errors to go with three hits. The big hits in the inning were a two-run double by
Garrett Clendenning (Biloxi) and a two-run triple by Keeton.
The Bears scored three runs in the top of the third to make it 8-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, pinch-hitter
McCrae Houston (Northwest Rankin) homered over the right field wall to make it 9-3.
Harris walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and
Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) followed with a double.
Jakob Wax (Prairieville, Louisiana) then crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 12-3.
Bevill St. scored three runs in the seventh.
Sam Mansell (Northeast Jones) got the win, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing no runs, two hits, a walk and recording three strikeouts as he earned his first decision of the year. Starter
Andrew Nix (Stringer) went 3.0 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) and six hits.
Cade Mattison (Lamar Christian) pitched an inning and had two strikeouts.
Joshua Sullivan (Brandon) pitched the final inning, allowing three runs (none earned), one hit and notching a strikeout.
Wax, a Louisiana-Monroe transfer, drove in three runs with a home run and a single. Houston homered, Keeton tripled and Clendenning and Ducksworth doubled. Hutchinson and Garrity added singles.
Starter Blake Wilson, the first of six Bevill St. pitchers, took the loss. He lasted .2 innings and gave up six runs (one earned) on just one hit and struck out three.
McGlothin doubled and singled twice for the Bears. Davis, Zac Durham and Jackson Elkins added doubles with Seth Harris, Harrison Stout and Cale Crews adding singles.
