Calvin Temple (Center Hill) made four technical free throws with 28 seconds remaining to help Jones College edge Mississippi Gulf Coast 83-31 here in a wild contest Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Jones improves to 8-0 overall, 2-0 in the MACCC. Gulf Coast falls to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Bobcats were seemingly in command with a 78-64 lead with less than five minutes to play. A
Jabari Bowman (Warren Central) free throw gave Jones a 79-68 lead with 4:16 left. Carr Thiam's basket cut the lead to 79-70.
The Bobcats were then whistled for a foul on a missed Bulldog 3-point attempt. A technical foul was then called on the Jones' bench, giving Gulf Coast's Melvion Flanagan five free throws. He made them all and suddenly it was 79-75 with 2:01 remaining.
After Jones misfired on a couple of shots, Anthony Ratliff converted a 3-point play for Gulf Coast to make it 79-78 with 1:09 remaining.
The Bobcats missed another shot and Flanagan drained a 3-pointer to give Gulf Coast an 81-79 lead with 46 seconds left. It was the Bulldogs' first lead since 20-18 with 11:37 left in the first half.
Jones got the ball downcourt, but a jump ball was called after a turnover.
After the jump ball call, there was a scuffle and Gulf Coast's Donovan Sanders was called for two technical fouls and ejected from the game.
Temple then calmly sank all four technical foul shots to put Jones ahead, 83-81.
Gulf Coast had two 3-point attempts, but Calvin Johnson's shot missed with 24 seconds left and Thiam's shot at the buzzer was no good and Jones pulled out the victory.
The Bobcats led 44-33 at halftime and held its longest lead at 61-44 with 15:23 left after Temple made a layup.
Ashton Campbell (Forrest County AHS) led the Bobcats with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers.
Decorian Payton (Center Hill) had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Temple finished with 18 points and
Caleb McGill (Petal) had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Temple had seven assists and McGill had three steals.
Anthony Ratliff topped the Bulldogs with 23 points. Thiam added 17, Flanagan had 16 and Sanders added 13.
Jones made 17-of-41 shots for 41 percent, 11-of-29 3-pointers for 38 percent and 8-of-10 free throws for 80 percent. Gulf Coast hit 31-of-81 shots for 38 percent, 9-of-33 3-pointers for 27 percent and 10-of-14 free throws for 71 percent.
The Bobcats outrebounded the Bulldogs 53-50 and had 19 turnovers compared to 16 for Gulf Coast.
Gulf Coast outscored Jones 38-32 on points in the paint. Jones had 11 fast break points, compared to six for the Bulldogs.
Jones will compete in the Panhandle Classic this weekend in Marianna, Florida. The Bobcats meet Pensacola State at 3 p.m. Friday and tournament host and third-ranked Chipola at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Gulf Coast hosts Baton Rouge on Thursday.
