PERKINSTON – Five Bobcats scored in double figures, led by
Ashton Campbell's 22 points, and Jones rode a 17-point halftime lead to a 78-69 road win over rival Mississippi Gulf Coast Thursday night.
Jones improved to 5-0 and has won 11 of the last 13 meetings over the Bulldogs. MGCCC suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1.
The two teams will meet again on Dec. 6 in the second conference game of the season in Ellisville.
The Bobcats held the Bulldogs to 26 percent shooting in the first half to take a 43-26 lead.
Jabari Bowman had nine of his 11 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
Campbell got hot the final 20 minutes, scoring 16 second half points.
Jones built its largest lead at 64-42 with 9:41 to play on a steal and dunk by
Decorian Payton.
A huge 21-6 run for the Bulldogs got the Bobcat lead down to 70-63 with under three minutes to play before Jones was able to hold on for the win.
Behind Campbell's 22, Payton had 12 points and
Calvin Temple, Bowman and
Kaeden Laws each added 11. Temple also had six of Jones' 15 steals.
Three Bobcats fouled out in the contest.
Jones shot 37 percent for the evening compared to 36 percent for Gulf Coast.
