Bobcats pull away late at BRCC behind Payton's 22-point night

BATON ROUGE, La. – Decorian Payton scored a season-high 22 points and Jones outscored Baton Rouge 24-9 the final 10 minutes to pull away for a 75-57 win Saturday afternoon at the Bonne Sant Wellness Center.

The Bobcats improved to 4-0 on the season and dropped BRCC to 0-5.

Jones missed its first 10 shots of the game and fell behind early 6-0, only to tie it up at 6-6 after a putback by Jabari Bowman.

Leading 27-24 with three minutes left in the opening half, an 11-4 run helped Jones take a 10-point lead at the break.

Baton Rouge used a barrage of three-pointers to get back in it, 51-48, with Morantz James hitting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Just like the first half, a late Bobcat run to close the period allowed them to take a game-high lead at the final horn, 75-57.

Jones shot 45 percent from the floor while holding the Bears to 25 percent overall and just 9-of-38 from three-point range. The Bobcats also held a big edge on the boards, 56-32.

Payton was a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor and grabbed seven boards in addition to his game-high 22. Kaeden Laws added 19 points, nine rebounds, Calvin Temple added 16 and Bowman had eight points and 12 boards.

Monday's scheduled game against William Carey JV has been canceled. Jones will travel to Gulf Coast (5-0) on Thursday for a non-conference tilt. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
