ELLISVILLE – Several Jones College women's tennis players claimed titles in the Southern ITA Regional Championships recently.
The event was held Sept. 29-Oct. 3 at the Jones College Tennis Complex with matches also being played at Tatum Park in Hattiesburg and River Hills in Jackson because of rain.
Sarah Powell (Madison-Ridgeland Academy) won the Open Singles Flight B main draw and Sophie Endt (Vancleave) won the Open Singles Flight C main draw. Reagan Salter (Lewisburg) and Powell won the Open Doubles Flight B main draw.
Mia Höddinghaus (Germany) and
Addy Seward (Richland) won the Open Doubles Flight A consolation round.
In Open Singles Flight B, Powell defeated Anesha Smith of Hinds, 6-1, 6-2; Meridian's Harper Bryan, 6-1, 6-3; Coastal Alabama's Alyssa Steed, 6-2, 6-2; teammate Michaela Anderson (Tupelo) 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals; and Sarah Cline of Meridian in the championship, 6-1, 6-2.
Anderson beat Kolbi Holifield of Meridian, 6-1, 6-2; Hinds' Nyesha Nealon, 6-2, 6-2; and Meridian's
Kamryn Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-3 before falling to Powell.
Salter lost to Emi Smith of Hinds, 6-3, 6-0. She beat Emma Pager of Coastal Alabama in the consolation round, 8-6, and lost to Itawamba's Sydney Ostrander, 8-2.
Allie Johnson (Hernando) defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast's Bayley Askin, 4-6, 7-5 (10-7) and lost to Cline, 4-6, 4-6.
In Open Singles Flight C, Endt beat Meridian's Madison Embry, 6-1, 6-2; East Central's Madison Gregg, 6-2, 6-1; and Meridian's Isabella Sanders in the championship, 6-1, 6-0.
Madison James (Northeast Jones) beat East Central's Ivey Bruntlett, 6-3, 4-6, (10-1) and lost to Sanders, 2-6, 0-6.
In Open Singles Flight A, Seward beat Meridian's Isabella Warham, 6-2, 3-6, (10-5). She then lost to Copiah-Lincoln's Juliana Madrid, 3-6, 2-6.
Höddinghaus defeated Coastal Alabama's Carlee Teague, 6-0, 6-2. She then fell to Gulf Coast's Tanya Kaome, 3-6, 3-6.
In Open Doubles Flight A, Seward and Höddinghaus fell 7-9 to Hinds' Itzel Lara Gonzalez and Emi Smith. They then beat East Central's Camilia Vanegas and Maud Tsaura, 8-1, and defeated Gulf Coast's Ashley Chelette and Kasey Kent, 8-1. They defeated GC's Kaome and Hayden Hensarling in the finals, 6-1, 6-1.
Johnson and Anderson beat Coastal Alabama's Teague and Steed, 8-6; GC's Kaome and Hensarling, 8-6; and Itawamba's Gaia del Sordo and Ostrander, 8-1. They lost to Meridian's Ana Julissa De Mata and Warham in the finals, 2-6, 0-6.
In Open Doubles Flight B, Salter and Powell beat Meridian's Tyler Athas and Sanders, 8-1; East Central's Bruntlett and Gregg, 8-1; and Hinds' Myesha Nealon and Nyesha Nealon, 8-4, and defeated Hinds' Morgan Ross and Anesha Smith for the title, 6-0, 1-6 (10-8).
Endt and James beat Holifield and Embry, 8-3, and lost to Coastal Alabama's Imani Ivory and Taji Williams, 6-8.
