Top-ranked Jones splits with No. 16 Northeast

ELLISVILLE – Top-rated Jones College split two games with No. 16 Northeast Mississippi here Monday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
Jones rallied from a 5-0 deficit and defeated the Tigers 7-5 in game one. In game two, Jones fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but could not make the comeback and dropped an 8-3 decision.
Jones, 35-6 overall and 19-3 in the MACJC, hosts Meridian in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday. Northeast, 28-12 and 13-7, visits Northwest Wednesday.
No. 1 Lady Bobcats 7, Tigers 5
Hallie Donald (Mooreville) had trouble in the second inning, but shut out Northeast in the other six innings and improved to 20-1. She in second in NJCAA Division II in victories.
Donald allowed five runs, nine hits, walked one and struck out four as she got the win.
Northeast scored all of its runs in the second inning.
With one out, Leah Jones walked and Colby Cox doubled to left-center. Kelsie Gerhart's groundout scored Jones and Alexis McGregor followed with an infield single. Breanna Tarpley's single to left scored Cox and Lizzy Van Manen followed with a three-run home run just inside the rightfield foul pole to cap the inning.
The Lady Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the second when Faith Denton (Northwest Rankin) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and would later score on an error.
Jones would score five runs in the third inning and take a 6-5 lead.
LP Trammell (Germantown) led off with a double off the wall in center and Raven Blackwell (St. Patrick) followed with a single to score Trammell. McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) singled and Kayla Collins (East Central) walked to load the bases. Denton was again by a pitch, which scored Raven Blackwell to make it 5-3.
Rebekah DiLavore (Ocala, Florida) followed with a two-run single to score Sikes and Collins and tie the game at 5-5. Raylen Blackwell's (St. Patrick) single to center scored DiLavore to give Jones a 6-5 lead.
The Lady Bobcats added a run in the sixth when Sikes walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Shelbie Phillips (Mooreville). Phillips stole second and scored when Collins reached on an error.
Donald doubled and singled with DiLavore getting two singles. Trammell had a double and Raven Blackwell, Sikes, Collins, Raylen Blackwell and Mollie Singleterry (Wayne County) added singles.
Mullins went the distance and took the loss. She allowed seven runs, 10 hits, walked four and struck out five. 
Van Manen homered and singled with McGregor getting two singles. Tarpley, Mullins, Caleigh Wallace, Jones and Cox added singles.

Van Manen got Northeast off to a fast start in game two.
McGregor reached on an error to start the game and two batters later, Van Manen homered over the leftfield wall to make it 2-0.
Jones got on the board in the second when Collins walked, took second on a groundout by Raven Blackwell and scored on a single by DiLavore.
Northeast made it 4-1 in the third when Rebecca Sheffield led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by McGregor and scored on a double by Tarpley. Wallace's single drove in Tarpley.
Sikes hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2.
The Tigers made it 5-2 in the fifth when Van Manen doubled to left and scored on a single by Cox.
Northeast added three runs in the seventh. Tarpley reached on an error and Van Manen doubled. Cox reached on another error, allowing two runs to score. After a single by Holden, a sacrifice fly by Jones made it 8-2.
Trammell hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh to end the scoring. She now has 17 home runs, which ties her for second in the nation.
Sikes and Trammell homered, Singleterry doubled and DiLavore singled for Jones.
Starter Lauren Stringer went four-plus innings and took the loss. She allowed four runs (three earned), seven hits, walked none and struck out two. Marley Peagler (Brandon) went 3.0 innings, giving up four runs (one earned), six hits and no walks.
Van Manen homered, doubled twice and singled for Northeast. Tarpley doubled and singled with Mullins and Sheffield each getting two singles. Wallace, Cox and Holden added singles.
Ayriana Stoneback went the distance and got the win. She gave up three runs, four hits, walked four and struck out seven.
