ELLISVILLE – The homestanding Jones College Bobcats got 31 points from
Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) and edged the previously undefeated and 7
th-ranked Pearl River Wildcats 91-88 in overtime in the "Catfight on the Court' here Thursday night before a loud, raucous crowd at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bobcats are 15-4 overall and are tied for first place in the MACJC South Division at 9-1. Jones has now won seven straight games.
The Bobcats led for the majority of the game, but Pearl River would tie it at 75-75 with 1:20 left in regulation on a Christopher Agbo free throw.
Tirus Smith (Petal) then hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds to play to put the Bobcats up, 78-75.
With the Bobcats leading 80-78,
David McCoy (Meridian) made a free throw to give Jones an 81-78 lead with 10.3 seconds left. PRCC's Jonas James III was fouled with 8.7 seconds to play. He made the first shot, missed the second and the Wildcats got the rebound.
Cameron Smith was fouled, went to the line and hit both shots to tie the game at 81-81 with 7.2 seconds left.
Alexander had a long shot at the buzzer to win it, but it was no good, forcing overtime.
In the extra session,
Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) made a free throw to give Jones an 86-84 lead with 2:15 to play. Brandon Rachel then hit a long jumper to tie it at 1:48 and Cedric Brim II scored at 1:15 to put Pearl River up, 88-86.
Alexander scored with 44.6 seconds remaining to tie it at 88-88.
Tirus Smith blocked a shot and the ball hit Brim and went out of bounds to give the Bobcats the ball.
Williams then took the ball to the goal and scored on a layup with 7.2 seconds to play to give the Bobcats a 90-88 lead. After the Wildcats turned the ball over, Alexander was fouled with 1.2 seconds remaining.
He missed the first shot and made the second. PRCC got the ball inbounds to Rachel, who misfired from just past midcourt on a lengthy 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Bobcats led 30-19 with 7:20 left in the first half when Alexander scored. Jones took its longest lead of the game at 42-30 with 1:32 left in the first half on an Alexander 3-pointer. The Bobcats led 44-35 at halftime.
Alexander converted a 3-point play with 17:55 remaining to put the Bobcats ahead, 51-41. The Wildcats would come back and take its only lead of the second half at 66-65 with 6:00 left on a Kirk Parker basket.
After Alexander's effort, Williams had 15 points for the Bobcats.
Rachel led Pearl River with 22 points. Brim and Eric Thornton Jr. had 17 points each.
The Wildcats are now 18-1 overall and 9-0 in the division.
Jones visits East Central on Monday.
Pearl River will entertain Hinds on Monday.
