Daytona State ends Jones' season in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – No. 24 Daytona State College pulled away from Jones College in the final eight minutes and defeated the Bobcats 103-74 here Saturday afternoon at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in the opening game of the NJCAA Division I Tournament.
 
The Bobcats, seeded No. 16, end the season at 24-10 and have lost in their opening game of the national tournament in the last three years.
 
Daytona State (27-7), seeded No. 17, meets top-seeded Howard College (Texas) at noon on Monday in the round of 16.
 
Jones trailed 65-48 midway through the second half, but a Keron Jackson three-pointer got the Bobcats within 69-61 with 8:10 remaining. But the Falcons went on a 17-3 run over the next four minutes and went ahead 86-64 with 4:35 left on a Tyrese Lacey trey.
 
Daytona State's largest lead of the day would be at the end of the game.
 
The Bobcats started off the game well and took an 8-3 lead with 16:37 left in the first half when Braylon Barnes made a layup.
 
However, the Falcons went on a 12-0 run and went ahead 15-8 on a three-pointer by CJ Hall with 12:04 showing. Daytona State would go on to take a 44-33 halftime lead.
 
A Seydina N'diaye three-point play gave the Falcons a 65-48 lead with 11:15 left in the second half. The Bobcats then went on a 13-4 run and got within eight points with just over eight minutes to play, but that would be as close as they would get.
 
Daytona State outscored Jones 59-41 in the second half.
 
Jay Tyler led the Bobcats with 18 points and Bob Dickson had 16. Braylon Barnes had 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Dylan Rowe had 12 points. Jackson added 11 points and Dickson had seven rebounds. 
 
Adrian Shackleton had 24 points, including a 6-of-7 effort from three-point range to lead Daytona State. Noah Mendy had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Hall had 15 points off the bench and Lacey added 13.
 
Jones was 24-of-68 from the field for 35 percent, 7-of-20 from three-point range for 35 percent and 19-of-32 from the free throw line for 59 percent. The Falcons were 37-of-73 from the floor for 51 percent, 17-of-35 from three-point range for 49 percent and 12-of-21 from the foul line for 57 percent.
 
The Falcons outrebounded Jones, 51-39, and they had 22 assists, compared to 18 for Jones. Daytona State had 13 turnovers and the Bobcats had 12. Daytona State had 33 points off the bench and Jones had 11.
