UTICA – The Jones College Bobcats defeated Hinds Community College 73-62 here Monday night at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.
The victory sets up a major showdown with No. 9 Pearl River Community Thursday.
The Bobcats are 14-4 overall, 8-1 in the MACJC South Division and have won six straight games. Pearl River is 17-0 and 9-0 in the division. The game will air at 7:30 p.m. on www.jcjc.tv.
The Bobcats had productive nights from several players as they notched the win.
Tirus Smith (Petal) led the way with 22 points, while
Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) posted another 'double double' with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) had five assists.
The Bobcats led 38-31 at halftime.
Jones was up 46-35 with 16:59 to play, 53-50 at the 9:07 mark, 60-55 with 4:57 remaining and 65-58 with 2:32 left.
Jones was 33-of-60 (5-of-16 from 3-point range) for 55 percent. The Bobcats were 8-of-14 from the free throw line for 57 percent.
Dontrell McQuarter had 15 points for Hinds with Stephane Ayangma scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs were 23-of-55 (5-of-15 from 3-point range) for 42 percent. Hinds was 11-of-18 from the foul line.
Jones outrebounded Hinds, 35-25. The Bobcats had 17 assists and Hinds had 14.
The Bulldogs are 10-8 overall, 3-6 in division play.
Hinds hosts Meridian on Thursday.
