ELLISVILLE – The Jones College Bobcats claimed the MACJC South Division co-championship with a 91-58 decision over Copiah-Lincoln here on 'Sophomore Night" Thursday at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bobcats end the regular season at 18-5 overall and 12-2 in the division. No. 16 Pearl River also finished at 12-2, but the Bobcats will be the No. 1 seed in next week's state tournament because they swept Mississippi Gulf Coast and PRCC split with the Bulldogs.
Jones will host the MACJC Tournament Feb. 25-28.
An official tournament bracket will be released on Friday, but the will face Mississippi Delta at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first round.
The game was never in doubt as the Bobcats scored the game's first 11 points.
Jones took a 23-5 lead on a 3-pointer by
Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) from the right corner with 11:07 left in the first half. A 3-pointer by
Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) put Jones up 41-17 with 4:19 left in the first half.
Another Edwards' 3-pointer with 1:51 showing gave the Bobcats its longest lead of the half at 51-20. The Bobcats led 51-24 at halftime.
Jones continued to roll in the second half.
The Bobcats led by as much as 37 points on two occasions with the final being at 83-46 with 5:26 remaining when
Brandon Jones (West Jones) scored.
Kenneth Rogers (Starkville) led the Bobcats with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Edwards had 14, including four 3-pointers.
Tirus Smith (Petal) had 13 points, including five dunks.
Zachariah Malone (Shady Grove, Louisiana) added 11 points.
Smith and
David Gaines Jr. (Wayne County) had seven rebounds each and
Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) had seven assists.
Miles Daniels had 16 points for the Wolves and Damarius Brooks added 13. Co-Lin only dressed seven players.
The Bobcats were 36-of-64 from the field (14-of-35 from 3-point range) for 56 percent. Jones was 5-of-8 from the free throw line.
The Wolves were 18-of-56 from the floor (8-of-24 from 3-point range) for 32 percent. Co-Lin was 14-of-21 from the charity stripe.
Jones outrebounded Co-Lin, 38-36. The Wolves turned the ball over 21 times, compared to 12 for Jones.
Co-Lin ends the season at 11-12 overall, 4-10 in division play.
