Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) scored 23 points to help Jones College to an 86-78 victory over HInds Community College here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Tirus Smith (Petal) added 16 and
Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored 15 points on five 3-pointers.
The Bobcats led for almost the entire first half.
A Smith basket at the 9:36 mark gave Jones its longest lead of the first half at 28-20.
Hinds fought back and took its first lead of the game with 26 seconds left in the half when Stephane Ayangma scored to make it 43-42. But Smith's basket with one second showing put the Bobcats up 44-43 at halftime.
An Edwards' 3-pointer with 14:25 showing gave Jones a 58-52 advantage. But the Bulldogs rallied and tied the game at 62-62 on a 3-pointer by Peyton Taylor with 11:31 remaining.
Alexander's basket at 9:52 gave Jones the lead for good at 64-62. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Edwards would give Jones a 75-66 lead with 5:08 to play and another 3-pointer by Edwards gave the Bobcats its longest lead of the game at 78-68 with 3:32 to play.
Anthony Johnson's layup with 1:40 to play got Hinds to within 80-76, but the Bulldogs would get no closer.
Taylor had 22 points for Hinds and Ayangma added 20.
The Bobcats are 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the MACJC South Division. The Bulldogs are now 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the division.
Jones plays at unbeaten and No. 17 Pearl River on Monday. Hinds goes to Meridian on Monday.
