ELLISVILLE – Top-ranked Jones County saw its 25-game winning streak come to an end here Sunday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.
No. 7 Itawamba scored four runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat JCJC, 6-3, in game one of a doubleheader.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) walked and scored on a double to center by
Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana).
ICC tied it in the second when Macey Cox walked, stole second, went to third on a single by Shelby Newsom and scored on Joanna Vasquez's single.
A four-run, fifth inning proved to be crucial for ICC.
Newsom singled with one out and Madison Carnes' single with two outs put two runners on base. Cori Childs then walked to load the bases. Meg Sullivan then delivered a two-run single and Samantha Conley followed with a two-run double to give the Lady Indians a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Hallie Donald (Mooreville) and
McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) led off with walks. After a fly out,
Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) singled to load the bases.
Sarah Brock (North Pike) then narrowly missed a base hit down the leftfield line when it was ruled foul. But she did hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Donald and make it 5-2.
Carnes hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to put ICC up 6-2.
Faith Denton (Northwest Rankin) led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to make it 6-3. McCleskey and Brock then drew walks to bring the tying run to the plate with no outs. But a fly ball to center, a pop up to second and a line out to second ended the inning.
JCJC got singles from Donald and Denton in the seventh, but could not score.
Starter
Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) went 3.2 innings and took the loss. Perque, 13-2, allowed four runs, five hits, walked three and struck out three. Donald pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowed one run, six hits, walked none and struck out two.
Denton homered and singled, while Donald singled twice for Jones. Venable added a double and Murray singled.
Bailie Springfield went the distance and got the win. She allowed three runs, six hits, walked seven and struck out two.
Carnes homered and singled for ICC, while Childs, Sullivan and Newsom each had two singles. Conley doubled with Cox and Vasquez adding singles.
JCJC is now 33-2 overall and 20-1 in the MACJC.
