SENATOBIA – Second-ranked Jones County Junior College pounded out 14 hits and whipped Northwest Mississippi 10-1 in five innings in the opening game of a doubleheader here Sunday afternoon.
Jones took command quickly with a five-run, top of the first inning.
Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) led off with a triple and
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) singled her home. Murray stole second and scored on
Emily Robinson's (Lafayette) single. A single by
McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) brought home Robinson to make it 3-0.
Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) followed with an RBI single. She would score went
Faith Denton (Northwest Rankin) reached on an error.
JCJC took a 7-0 lead in the second inning when Murray singled, Robinson reached on an error, Donald reached on a fielder's choice and Sikes walked. Venable then delivered a two-run single.
Northwest scored its run in the second when Sarah Johnson and Katie Brownlee singled and Johnson later scored on an error.
Jones ended the scoring in the third.
Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) led off with a single and
Sarah Brock (North Pike) followed with a single. Loftin followed with an RBI single and Robinson's double would drive in a run. Donald's double scored Robinson.
Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) went the first three innings and got the win. She allowed one run (unearned), two hits, walked and struck out four as she improved to 5-1. Sikes pitched the final two innings, allowed no runs, one hit and struck out two.
Robinson doubled twice, singled and had two RBIs. Venable singled twice and drove in three runs. Loftin tripled and singled, while Murray and Brock each singled twice. Sikes and Donald had doubles and McCleskey singled.
Johnson, Brownlee and Ally Judkins each singled for Northwest.
Harley Smith, 2-5, went 1.2 innings as the starter and took the loss. She allowed five runs (four earned) and five hits. Brownlee, Johnson and Hope Clantan also pitched for Northwest.
JCJC is now 16-1 overall, 3-0 in the MACJC. Northwest is 4-7 and 0-3.
