ELLISVILLE – Top-rated Jones County Junior College broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth and defeated Hinds Community College, 12-6, in game one here Monday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) led off by reaching on a two-base error, Murray walked and
Emily Robinson (Lafayette) followed with an RBI double.
The Lady Bobcats went up 6-0 in the second inning.
Faith Denton (Northwest Rankin) was hit by a pitch to start the frame and
Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) doubled.
Sarah Brock's (North Pike) infield single scored Denton. Loftin followed with an RBI single to right.
After Murray walked, Robinson drilled a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Hallie Donald's (Mooreville) single to left drove in Murray.
But the Eagles would fight back to tie it in the fifth.
Kasy Cortezie singled and with two outs, Carlie Steele walked. Brooke Patterson then reached on an error to load the bases. Nikki Skerlong reached on an infield single, which scored two runs. Amelia Purdy and Madeleine Hart followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-4. Hannah Mitchell reached on another error and Taci Watts tied it with a two-run single.
But JCJC quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
McCleskey led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Brock. Loftin reached on a bunt single, Murray sacrificed and Robinson walked to load the bases.
Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) then drove in a run with a ground out to make it 8-6.
The Lady Bobcats continued the momentum in the sixth.
McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) led off with a single and was replaced by pinchrunner
Simone McKinney (Harrison Central). With one out, McCleskey doubled to left. Brock and Loftin followed with RBI singles to give Jones a 10-6 lead.
Robinson ended the scoring with a two-run double.
Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) went the first five innings and got the win. Perque, 11-1, allowed six runs (none earned), eight hits, walked one and struck out five. Donald pitched the final two innings and got her first save of the season. She allowed no runs and no hits.
Robinson doubled twice, singled and drove in five runs. McCleskey doubled twice and singled, while Brock had three singles and three RBIs. Loftin had three singles and two RBIs. Venable, Donald and Sikes added singles.
Cortezie doubled and singled for the Eagles and Purdy singled twice. Steele, Skerlong, Hart and Watts added singles.
Reliever Caitlin Adkins went three innings and took the loss. She allowed two runs, three hits and walked four. Starter Bryanna Luke pitched two innings, allowed six runs (five earned), seven hits, walked three and struck out two. Lizzy Lloyd tossed an inning, allowed four runs, five hits and struck out one.
JCJC is now 28-1 overall and 15-0 in the MACJC.
Hinds drops to 16-11 and 9-4.
