GULF SHORES, Alabama – Southern Union scored twice in the sixth inning and held on to defeat No. 2 Jones County 2-1 here Saturday in the Sun Chief Classic.
The Lady Bobcats, 8-1, went 4-1 over the weekend. All games were against NJCAA Division I opponents.
The Lady Bobcats scored a run in the first inning when
Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) reached on a bunt single, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy).
In the sixth, the first two Southern Union batters reached on errors. A single followed to tie the game and a two-out single put Southern Union ahead.
The Lady Bobcats went down in order in the sixth.
McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) drew a one-out walk in the seventh, but that would be JCJC's only baserunner.
Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) went the distance and took the loss. She allowed two runs (none earned), eight hits, walked one and struck out six.
Loftin,
Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) and
Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) singled for JCJC's only hits.
The Lady Bobcats will now host the Gwen Magee Invitational Feb.23-24 at Community Bank Park.
On Feb. 23, Northwest faces Coastal Alabama-East at 1 p.m., followed by JCJC vs. Coastal Alabama-East at 3 p.m. Northwest plays Illinois Central at 5 p.m. and JCJC meets Illinois Central at 7 p.m.
On Feb. 24, JCJC meets Illinois Central in a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
