ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College went without a field goal for over nine minutes in the second half and fell to Southwest 82-74 here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
A
Mason Daniels' (Atlanta, Georgia) basket with 15:52 left in the game pulled JCJC within 51-49.
The Bobcats would not score from the field again until a
David McCoy (Meridian) 3-pointer with 6:09 left – a 9:43 drought. That cut the lead to 69-53.
But the Bobcats would not go away.
A McCoy basket at 3:40 made it 72-66 and two
Quentin Pough (Wayne County) free throws made it 73-68 with 2:39 left.
But the Bobcats would get no closer.
JCJC started the game well, taking an 11-6 lead at the 15:51 mark of the opening half on a
Winceton Edwards' (Oak Grove) 3-pointer. But Southwest came back to take a 26-17 lead with 9:27 showing on a Roydell Brown bucket.
The Bears were up 37-30 when JCJC scored seven straight and tied it at 37-37 on another Edwards' 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark.
But Southwest would take the lead for good when Antonio Cowart Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds showing to make it 42-39. The Bears would carry that lead into halftime.
Edwards led JCJC, 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the MACJC South Division, with 25 points – 20 in the first half.
Malik Henry (Terry) added 13 and McCoy finished with 12.
Jeremy Harrell had 21 for the Bears, while Brown had 15, Cowart finished with 13 and Robert Boyd had 11.
The Bobcats will host Mississippi Gulf Coast at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
Southwest, 15-5 overall and 6-5 in the division, goes to Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday.
