TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The Pensacola St. (Florida) Pirates pulled away in the second half and defeated Jones College 65-52 here Saturday in the
Tallahassee DemocratHoliday Classic.
Jones fell behind 14-6 early, but came back to take a 26-24 lead on a 3-pointer by
Kenneth Rogers (Starkville) with 59 seconds left in the first half. Yelkson Montero scored at the buzzer to tie the game at 26-26 at the break.
Jones would take its final lead of the game at 29-28 with 17:07 to play on a free throw by
Casey Smith Jr. (Columbus.)
But the Pirates would then take control with a 14-0 run and take a 42-29 lead with 12:48 remaining. The closest the Bobcats would get would be 45-37 with 8:48 to play on a 3-pointer by
Brandon Jones (West Jones).
Pensacola's longest lead would be 57-40 with 3:29 left.
Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) and Smith led the Bobcats with 14 points each.
Shardarrion Allen (Raymond) had seven points and 12 rebounds. Allen had 16 rebounds in Friday's 78-66 loss to No. 4 Tallahassee.
Montero had 23 points for the Pirates and Mike McDougal added 20.
Jones was only 19-of-64 from the field (10-of-32 from 3-point range) for 30 percent. The Bobcats were 4-of-7 from the free throw line.
Pensacola was 26-of-58 from the field (6-of-22 from 3-point range) for 45 percent. The Pirates were 5-of-13 from the foul line.
The Bobcats, 7-3, will resume MACJC South Division play at home with a 7:30 p.m. game on Jan. 10 vs. Hinds.
Pensacola State, 12-5, visits Northwest Florida State College on Jan. 5.
