ELLISVILLE – For the first time since 2004, the Jones College men's soccer team will be playing for a state championshp.
Adrian Mondragon's goal at 86:15 lifted the Bobcats to an exciting 2-1 victory over Itawamba here Saturday night at Bobcat Soccer Field in the MACJC Tournament semifinals.
The Jones' men will meet Southwest at 7:30 p.m. Sunday for the title. The Bears edged Pearl River, 2-1, in overtime. Southwest scored the winning goal with one second left in the first overtime – the 99:99 mark.
Both Jones and Southwest have now qualified for the Region 23 Tournament.
The Jones/Southwest winner will host the Region 23 Tournament Oct. 27-28. The runnerup will meet LSU-Eunice on Oct. 27. If the runnerup wins on Oct. 27, there will be no game the next day. If LSU-Eunice beats the runnerup, the Bengals will face the state champion for the region title on Oct. 28.
Jones is now 13-2 on the season after the nailbiter over ICC.
Jones won in similar fashion in the regular season vs. ICC, falling behind 1-0 before rallying late.
After a scoreless first half, Itawamba took a 1-0 lead at 59:32 on a header by Ryan Parker.
The Bobcats got the equalizer at 67:01 when
Justis Casey (Greene County) found the net on an assist from Mondragon.
The winning score came on a lengthy shot by Mondragon that sneaked in the lower left part of the goal at 86:15.
Callum Harley (Whitley Bay, England) was in goal the entire game for Jones.
Itawamba ends the season at 11-5.
