Late surge lifts Bobcats past Hinds

ELLISVILLE – Coach Randy Bolden's Bobcats outscored Hinds 22-8 over the final 5:56 and posted a 76-64 decision here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Bolden was an assistant coach at Hinds last season. The Bobcat men are now 7-4 overall and 2-0 in MACJC South Division play.
Malik Henry (Terry) scored all 19 of his points in the second half and Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored all 13 of his points in the second half as the Bobcats rallied for the victory.
JCJC led 9-2 with 17:00 showing in the first half when David Gaines, Jr. (Wayne County) scored.
But the Bulldogs would come back and take a 23-22 lead when Anthony Johnson scored with 4:13 left in the opening half. Hinds ran the lead to 34-26 before Michael Williams (Rayville, Louisiana) scored to trim the margin to 34-28 at halftime.
Hinds took its longest lead of the night at 41-32 with 17:29 remaining on another Johnson basket.
JCJC slowly chipped into the lead and went ahead for good with 5:36 to play when Henry converted a 3-point play to make it 57-56. Edwards followed that up with a 3-pointer from the right corner to make it 60-56 with 4:55 remaining.
Henry completed another 3-point play at 3:33 and followed that up with a free throw at 3:01 to give the Bobcats a 66-57 advantage. Henry's two free throws with 22.4 seconds remaining gave Jones its longest lead of the game at 76-61.
Gaines had 15 points, while Mason Daniels (Atlanta, Georgia) finished with 12.
Gaines also led the Bobcats with 8 rebounds. Williams, Omar Steele (Laurel) and Henry had 6 boards each. Williams had a game-high 9 assists.
JCJC was 23-of-59 from the field (6-of-22 from 3-point range) with 39 percent, JCJC was 24-of-37 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs, coached by former JCJC assistant coach Yusef Fitzgerald, got 22 points from former Bobcat Enrique Milton. Johnson finished with 11.
Hinds falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in division play.
JCJC will entertain Pearl River at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
Hinds hosts Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday.
