ELLISVILLE – Nine straight batters reached base with two outs in the second inning as top-ranekd Jones County Junior College defeated Pearl River 11-1 in five innings in game two of a doubleheader here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC took the opener, 8-0.
JCJC is now 35-1 overall and tops the MACJC at 19-1. The Lady Bobcats visit Holmes for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
Pearl River drops to 14-18 overall and 6-14 in league play. The Lady Wildcats host Mississippi Delta on Saturday.
Pearl River took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two when Kayla Williams doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on Ilyssa Easton's groundout.
In the bottom of the first, Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy) led off with an infield single, Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) walked and
Kelly Byrd (Copiah Academy) reached on a fielder's choice. Autumn Frost (East Webster) drew a walk to load the bases and
Brittany Baty's (Northeast Lauderdale) sacrifice fly to center scored Loftin. Natalie Hogue (Harrison Central) then delivered a two-run double to center to make it 3-1.
JCJC put the game way in the bottom of the second when they scored eight runs with two outs.
McCrary reached on an infield single, Loftin singled and Byrd followed with an RBI single. Frost followed with a two-run single to make it 6-1. Baty reached on an error, which allowed Jessie Bumpous (Southaven), a courtesy runner for Frost, to score. After Hogue walked, Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) singled to score Baty.
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) then hit a two-run double and
Brittany Hagwood's (Enterprise) single scored Murray.
Madison Burge (Harrison Central) posted the victory, as she upped her record to 8-0. She pitched all five innings, allowed an unearned run, four hits, walked none and struck out seven.
Murray doubled and singled, while McCrary had two singles. Hogue had a double with Loftin, Byrd, Frost, Venable and Hagwood adding singles. Frost, Hogue and Murray each had two RBIs.
Olivia Holley went the first 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. She gave up seven runs, seven hits, walked two and struck out one. Scoggin pitched to three batters, allowed three runs (none earned), one hit and one walk. Shows pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up one run, two hits and struck out one.
Williams doubled, while Anna Grace Cooley, Katie Perry and Brook Smith added singles for PRCC.
