ELLISVILLE – No. 1 Jones County Junior College will host the MACJC Tournament May 5-7.
The Lady Bobcats completed a two-game sweep of Southwest with a 12-0, five inning victory here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
An official bracket with game times will be released soon, but JCJC, East Central, Itawamba and Mississippi Gulf Coast will be in the tournament. The top three teams in the state tournament will qualify for the Region 23 Tournament May 11-13 at the site of the state champion.
There was not much doubt in Saturday's game.
The Lady Bobcats, 44-2, scored four runs in the first inning and then got back-to-back-to-back home runs from
Kelly Byrd (Copiah Academy),
Autumn Frost (East Webster) and
Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale) in the second inning.
In the first inning,
Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy) singled, stole second and third and scored on
Kelsha Loftin's (Mendenhall) single. Frost reached on an error and was replaced by courtesy runner
Brittany Hagwood (Enterprise). Baty reached on a fielder's choice and Hagwood later scored on a wild pitch.
Emily Robinson (Lafayette) singled and scored on
Callie Venable's (Clinton, Louisiana) triple into the rightfield corner.
McCrary led off the second with an infield single and Loftin followed with a bunt single. Byrd then launched a three-run home run over the leftfield wall. Frost then hit the next pitch out of the park over the rightfield wall and Baty followed with another shot to give Jones a 9-0 lead.
JCJC ended the scoring in the third inning when
Sarah Brock (North Pike) singled and McCrary reached on a fielder's choice. McCrary stole second and scored on Byrd's single
Frost then drilled her second home run of the game with a drive over the rightfield wall.
For the season, Baty has 18 home runs, while Byrd and Frost have 16 home runs each.
Haylee Morse (Madison Central) went the first three innings and posted the win. She allowed no runs, three hits, walked none and struck out six. She is now 8-1 on the year.
Madison Burge (Harrison Central) pitched the final two innings and allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one.
Baty homered, doubled and singled, while Frost homered twice. Byrd homered, singled and drove in four runs to give her 76 RBIs on the year.
Venable had a triple, while McCrary, Loftin, Robinson and Brock had two singles each.
Starter Rebecca Davis went one-plus inning and took the loss. She allowed nine runs and nine hits. Kassie Shipley pitched three innings, allowed three runs and six hits. Mikaela Smith pitched an inning and allowed a hit.
Miranda Magee had two singles for the Lady Bears with Amy Bonvillian and Kayla Sanchez adding singles.
Southwest ends the season at 18-27.
