FULTON – No. 9 Itawamba Community College scored twice in the third inning and made it stand up as they defeated No. 1 Jones County Junior College 2-1 here Friday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader.
Jones won the opener, 9-2.
The Lady Bobcats, 38-2 overall and 22-2 in the MACJC, will host Hinds in a 4 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader. It will be the final home regular season doubleheader for JCJC and they can wrap up the regular season conference title with a sweep.
Itawamba, 32-10 overall and 19-5 in the MACJC, visits Holmes on Wednesday.
ICC got its two runs with two outs in the third.
Mary Kansas Sullivan singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Cori Childs, who stole second. With two outs, Meg Sullivan singled to put runners at first and third. Mamie Hollenhead then doubled to drive in both runners.
JCJC loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but a fly out to shallow center, a strikeout and another fly out ended the inning.
The Lady Bobcats scored in the fifth when Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) singled and scored on a double by
Kelly Byrd (Copiah Academy).
In the seventh, Byrd got a two-out single, but a groundout ended the game.
Haylee Morse (Madison Central) started for Jones. She went 2 1/3 innings, allowed one run, one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Amanda Holliday pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and took the loss. She gave up one run, four hits, walked one and struck out three. Holliday is 9-1 on the year.
Byrd doubled and singled, while Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy), Loftin,
Autumn Frost (East Webster) and
Natalie Hogue (Harrison Central) added singles.
Starter Caroline Dickens posted the victory. She went five innings, allowed one run, five hits, walked three and struck out four. Mills pitched the final two innings and got a save. She allowed no runs, one hit and struck out two.
Mary Kansas Sullivan had two singles for ICC. Hollenhead doubled with Meg Sullivan and McKenzie Piper getting singles.
