GULFPORT – No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast got a two-out, bases loaded triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and posted a 7-6 victory over No. 1 Jones County Junior College in game two here Tuesday afternoon at Jones County Junior College.
The Lady Bobcats won game one, 7-0.
The second game was tied 4-4 going into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Kelly Byrd (Copiah Academy) singled and scored on a double by Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale).
Emily Robinson's (Lafayette) double scored pinchrunner
Sarah Brock (North Pike) and gave JCJC a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lexie Mathis led off with a single. With two outs, Paige Dill singled and Kristen Sexton reached on an error to load the bases.
Abbey Salvo then tripled to center to clear the bases and hand JCJC its first loss.
The Lady Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the first when Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy) led off with an infield single and Byrd walked. McCrary would later score on a wild pitch and
Autumn Frost's (East Webster) groundout scored Byrd.
MGCCC tied it in the bottom of the first when Mathis and Precious Sanders singled. Sanders stole second and Mathis scored on the play. Izzy Werdann's single scored Sanders.
Jones went ahead 4-2 in the second when Robinson singled and scored on
Natalie Hogue's (Harrison Central) double.
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) tripled to score Hogue.
The Lady Bulldogs tied it in the third when Mathis and Sanders singled and Mathis scored on an error. Dill's sacrifice fly later in the inning made it 4-4.
Haylee Morse (Madison Central) took the tough-luck loss in relief. She pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed three runs (none earned), three hits, walked one and struck out five. She is now 5-1 on the year. Starter
Amanda Holliday (Watson, Louisiana) went two innings, allowed four runs, six hits, walked none and struck out three.
Robinson doubled and singled and
Brittany Hagwood (Enterprise) had two singles for Jones. Murray tripled with Baty and Hogue getting doubles. McCrary and Byrd had singles.
Mathis had three singles with Salvo getting a triple and a double for MGCCC. Sanders had two singles with Werdann and Dill adding singles.
Aidan Nichols went the distance and got the win. She gave up six runs, nine hits, walked two and struck out 11.
JCJC is now 29-1 overall and still leads the MACJC at 13-1. The Lady Bobcats travel to East Mississippi for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday and host Mississippi Delta at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
MGCCC, 23-8 overall and 12-2 in the league, goes to Meridian on Saturday.
