COLUMBUS, Georgia – Top-ranked Jones County Junior College defeated No. 6 Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa), 5-2, here Saturday in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Classic.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Emily Robinson (Lafayette) hit a solo home run.
In the third inning,
Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy) singled
Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) walked.
Kelly Byrd's (Copiah Academy) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third. A throwing error with two outs would allow both runners to score.
DMACC got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 3-2.
JCJC added two runs in the top of the seventh.
Loftin singled and scored when Byrd tripled to center.
Autumn Frost's (East Webster) sacrifice fly to center scored Byrd.
Madison Burge (Harrison Central) went the distance and got the win. Burge (4-0) allowed two runs, three hits, walked two and struck out six.
Natalie Hogue (Harrison Central) singled twice, while Robinson homered, Byrd tripled and Frost doubled. McCrary, Loftin,
Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale) and
Jessie Bumpous (Southaven) singled.
Molly Jacobson went the distance and took the loss for DMACC. She allowed five runs, nine hits, walked one and struck out eight.
Breanna Hunter homered with Autumn McDaniel and Kenzi Sutton getting doubles.
