COLUMBUS, Georgia – No. 1 Jones County Junior College used a five-run fifth inning and blanked No. 5 Kirkwood College (Iowa), 5-0, here Saturday in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Classic.
Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) tossed a one-hit shutout to spark the Lady Bobcats.
She gave up a single to Lexi Ferrari in the third inning. Perque (5-0) ended up with four strikeouts and two walks.
JCJC broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth.
Bailey Gilbert (Sylva-Bay Academy) led off with a single and was replaced by Jessie Bumpous (Southaven) as a pinchrunner. Natalie Hogue (Harrison Central) singled and Cori McCrary's (Carroll Academy) single scored Bumpous. Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) then singled to load the bases.
Kelly Byrd's (Copiah Academy) single scored pinchrunner
Brittany Hagwood (Enterprise) and McCrary to make it 3-0.
Autumn Frost (East Webster) followed with another single to load the bases. With two outs,
Emily Robinson (Lafayette) delivered another single to score two runs.
McCrary and Byrd had two singles, while Loftin, Frost, Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale), Robinson, Gilbert and Hogue each had a single.
Lexi Kinnaird went the distance and took the loss. She allowed five runs, 10 hits, struck out two and walked none.
JCJC is now 17-0 and will conclude play in the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. game on Sunday vs. Lansing College (Michigan).
The Lady Bobcats return home Tuesday for 4 p.m. MACJC doubleheader vs. Southwest. They play a noon doubleheader on Wednesday against John Wood College (Illinois) and host Northwest in a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader.
