WESSON – No. 10 Jones County Junior College outscored Copiah-Lincoln 19-10 over the game's final 6:02 and defeated the Wolves, 73-64, here Thursday night at Mullen Gymnasium/Gwyn Young Court.
The Bobcats, 16-1 overall, are now in sole possession of first place in the MACJC South Division at 7-1. Southwest Mississippi fell to 6-2 after losing 80-74 at East Central. Mississippi Gulf Coast is also 6-2 after beating Hinds, 76-73.
JCJC never trailed Thursday night, but Co-Lin made it interesting in the second half.
The Bobcats led 12-9 early and then went on a 14-5 run and took their longest lead of the first half at 26-14 when
Rickey Holden (Laurel) scored at the 8:30 mark. Jones would lead 34-24 at halftime.
The Wolves came out quickly in the second half and cut the lead to 36-35 when LaMarcus Lee slammed home a dunk with 17:26 remaining.
Bruce Stevens (Bay Springs) answered with a 12-footer and a 3-pointer to take the lead back out to 41-35 with 16:23 remaining. Co-Lin would have the opportunity to take the lead three times over the game's next 10 minutes, but could not convert.
The Wolves would come back and tie the game with 6:02 left when Anthony Jones made a free throw to make it 54-54.
But
Enrique Milton (Jackson Provine) scored to give Jones the lead for good and
Leito Holloway (Charlotte, North Carolina) followed with a 3-pointer to give Jones a 59-54 lead 5:03 to play.
Lee scored for the Wolves with 4:46 showing, but Holloway hit another 3-pointer, Milton made two free throws and Holloway scored on a drive to the goal. Stevens then made a layup to cap the 9-0 run and give Jones a 68-56 lead with 2:55 left.
The closest the Wolves would get after that would be 71-64 with 24.8 seconds to play when Ronnie Edwards made a 3-pointer.
Stevens had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats. Holden had 15 points and Holloway added 10.
Jonathan Floyd led the Wolves with 15 points and Youry White had 10.
The Bobcats were 26-of-63 from the floor (7-of-21 from 3-point range) for 41 percent. The Wolves were 23-of-61 from the field (6-of-25 from 3-point range) for 38 percent.
Jones was 14-of-24 from the free throw line, while Co-Lin was 12-of-20.
The Bobcats outrebounded Co-Lin, 43-40. Jones committed 14 turnovers and Co-Lin committed 12.
The Wolves are now 9-8 overall, 3-5 in division play.
JCJC will host Hinds at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
