GULF SHORES, Alabama – The No. 3 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats wrapped up a 5-0 weekend here Saturday in the Sun Chief Classic.
The Lady Bobcats ended play with a 6-5 victory over Gulf Coast State College (Florida).
JCJC led 6-1 after five innings and held on for the win.
Jones jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Cori McCrary (Carroll Academy) reached on an error,
Kelly Byrd (Copiah Academy) singled and
Autumn Frost (East Webster) reached on another error to load the bases. McCrary then scored on a passed ball.
Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale) then followed with a two-run double.
The Commodores got on the board in the third when Payton Burton, Alexis Marchozzi and Annsley Brown singled. Burton scored on an error.
The Lady Bobcats got the run back in the bottom of the third when McCrary reached on an error and Byrd singled. McCrary went to third on a groundout by Frost and scored on
Natalie Hogue's (Harrison Central) groundout.
JCJC made it 5-1 in the fourth.
Emily Robinson (Lafayette) was hit by a pitch and was replaced by
Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall).
Jessie Bumpous (Southaven) then sacrificed Loftin to second.
Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) followed with an RBI single.
Jones got its final run in the fifth when Byrd and Hogue drew walks and Baty followed with an RBI single.
Kynadi Tipler homered for the Commodores to make it 6-2 in the sixth.
In the seventh, Haley Wood, Kristina Manthei and Marchozzi singled with one out to load the bases. With two outs, Brown singled in a run. Tipler then followed with a two-run single.
But pitcher
Haylee Morse (Madison Central) got Payton Carpenter to fly out to Hagwood in right to end the game.
Morse (1-0) went the distance and got the win. She gave up five runs (four earned), 10 hits, walked none and struck out six.
Baty doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Byrd had two singles with McCrary and Venable adding singles.
Tipler homered, singled and had three RBIs for the Commodores. Brown and Marchozzi had two singles each with Manthei, Samantha Burks, Wood and Burton adding singles.
Carpenter was the starter and took the loss. She went 3 2/3 innings, allowed five runs (one earned), four hits, walked none and struck out two. Manthei went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowed one run, two hits, walked three and struck out three.
JCJC will host the Gwen Magee Invitational on Feb. 24-25 at Community Bank Park.
On Feb. 24, Southwest meets No. 10 Illinois Central at 3 p.m., followed by JCJC vs. Southwest at 5 p.m. and JCJC vs. Illinois Central at 7 p.m.
On Feb. 25, Southwest plays Illinois Central at 10 a.m., JCJC plays Illinois Central at noon, Southwest meets Hinds at 2 p.m. and JCJC faces Hinds at 4 p.m.
Gulf Coast State, 10-7, goes to Chattahoochee Valley (Alabama) on Feb. 25.
