GULF SHORES, Alabama – Freshman
Madison Burge (Harrison Central) sparkled in her collegiate debut for No. 3 Jones County Junior College.
Burge gave up only three hits, walked two and struck out 10 to lead the Lady Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over Southern Union College (Alabama) here Friday evening in the Sun Chief Classic. She retired the final 10 batters in a row.
The Lady Bobcats scored the game's only run in the fifth inning.
Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) led off with a single and
Brittany Hagwood (Enterprise) reached on a fielder's choice.
Simone McKinney (Harrison Central) doubled to left to drive in Hagwood.
McKinney and
Autumn Frost (East Webster) doubled for JCJC with Murray and
Brittany Baty (Northeast Lauderdale) getting singles.
Bailey Singleton went the distance for the Lady Bison and took the loss. She gave up one run, four hits, walked two and struck out four.
Morgan Bradford, Crislyn Graham and Hayden Claypool each singled for Southern Union.
The Lady Bison are now 9-4 on the year.
The Lady Bobcats, 3-0, will conclude play in the tournament with games vs. Trinity Valley (Texas) at 11:15 a.m. and Wallace State-Hanceville (Alabama) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
JCJC will make its home debut on Feb. 24-25 in the Gwen Magee Invitational at Community Bank Park.
