Bobcats hold off Coahoma, 78-74

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College made clutch stops late in the game and defeated Coahoma 78-74 here Friday afternoon at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
JCJC led for most of the contest, but it was not until Malik Henry (Terry) and Michael Williams (Rayville, Louisiana) made six free throws in the final 1:13 that the Bobcats could claim the win.
The Bobcats took a 71-62 lead with 3:20 left when David McCoy (Meridian) made two free throws. But the Tigers battled back and pulled within 72-69 with 1:36 left when Marcus Smitherville drilled a 3-pointer.
Coahoma came up with a steal and a chance to tie, but a 3-point attempt missed.
Henry would get the ball and get fouled. He made both ends of a 1-and-1 to give the Bobcats a 74-69 lead with 1:13 remaining. After another Coahoma miss, Henry would make two more free throws with 1:05 to play, giving Jones a 76-69 lead.
Malik Bailey's 3-pointer got the Tigers to within 76-72 with 40.5 seconds left, but Williams hit two foul shots with 36 seconds remaining to give Jones breathing room.
The game was close throughout the first half.
JCJC's biggest lead of the first half was 21-17 and 29-25. The Bobcats were down 35-33, but Henry hit a 3-pointer with :03 showing to give Jones a 36-35 lead at halftime.
The Bobcats held the upper hand throughout the second half.
A 3-pointer by Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) gave JCJC a 54-44 with 12:09 remaining. McCoy's basket with 8:27 left gave the Bobcats its longest lead of the evening at 60-48.
Henry was solid throughout the game and led the Bobcats with 27 points. Edwards, who had a game-high 27 points in Thursday's 98-86 win over Louisiana Christian Prep, had 15 and McCoy finished with 10.
Omar Steele pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and Michael Williams had six assists.
Bailey led the Tigers (1-1) with 22 points and Dykellius Grandberry added 12.
Coahoma had beaten East Central 81-75 on Thursday.
The Bobcats travel to Alabama Southern for a 7 p.m. game on Monday, while Coahoma visits Southwest.
