UTICA – The 14th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats held off a late surge by Hinds Community College and defeated the Bulldogs 98-88 here Thursday night at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.
In the men's game, the 14
th-ranked Bobcats held off a late charge and beat the Bulldogs, 98-88.
Jones remains unbeaten at 11-0 overall and 2-0 in division play.
The game was tied 3-3 early, but the Bobcats took a 9-3 lead on a
David Davis (Purvis) slam dunk with 16:50 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs came back and tied it at 20-20 when Deshaven Flowers scored with 11:17 left. But JCJC answered with a 7-0 run with Davis making a 3-pointer to make it 27-20 with 10:01 left.
Hinds cut the lead to 38-34 with 4:59 left when Trojuan White made a free throw. JCJC took the lead back out to 47-36 with 3:12 remaining when
Leito Holloway (Charlotte, North Carolina) hit a 3-pointer from the left corner.
The Bobcats led 49-42 at halftime.
Leading 59-53, JCJC scored 11 straight points with Davis converting a 3-point play to give the Bobcats its longest lead at 70-53 with 13:04 remaining.
Jones was up 85-72 with 6:38 left when Holloway scored, but Hinds came back. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 89-84 with 2:54 left when White slammed home a dunk.
But
Enrique Milton (Jackson Provine) scored on an offensive rebound and
Bruce Stevens (Bay Springs) got a dunk after a turnover to give Jones a 93-84 lead with 1:40 left.
Davis paced Jones with 18 points, while
Rickey Holden (Laurel) had 17, Stevens had 16,
Xavier Howard (Pearl) had 14 and Holloway finished with 12. Stevens finished with 9 rebounds and
Tristin Walley (Hattiesburg) had 8.
JCJC was 38-of-65 from the floor (7-of-17 from 3-point range) and was 15-of-24 from the free throw line.
White had 17 for the Bulldogs, 8-3 overall and 0-2 in the division, while David Robinson had 16, Dangelo West and Flowers had 14 each and Joel Baskins added 10.
The Bulldogs were 31-of-69 (12-of-33 from 3-point range) and 14-of-19 from the free throw line.
JCJC visits Pearl River for a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
Hinds goes to Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday.
