Baty, Byrd, Hayes lead No. 6 Lady Bobcats past Holmes

ELLISVILLE – Brittany Baty homered twice, Kelly Byrd homered once and Rachel Hayes struck out 11 as No. 6 Jones County beat Holmes 11-3 in six innings here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Kalyn Watts got JCJC off to quite a start when she bunted the ball back to pitcher Kassey Ard. The ball was thrown away all the way into the rightfield corner and Watts circled the bases on the error.
Holmes got all of its runs in the third inning. With two outs, Torey Daniels and Micah Redd singled. Blair Little then hit a three-run home run over the leftfield fence to make it 3-1.
JCJC tied it in the fourth when Byrd and Baty hit back-to-back home runs.
The Lady Bobcats regained the lead in the fifth inning.
Jay Harris doubled and scored on Cori McCrary's two-out single. McCrary then stole second and scored on Byrd's single. Baty then launched her second home run of the game over the centerfield fence to make it 7-3.
JCJC ended the game in the sixth.
Hayes drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Brittany Hagwood. Ashley Valentine walked and was replaced by courtesy runner Haylee Morse. Hagwood then stole third and scored when the ball was thrown into leftfield. Morse advanced to third on the play.
Harris doubled to score Morse and Watts followed with a walk. McCrary blooped a single to center and Byrd ended the game with a two-run single to right-center.
Hayes, 14-1, went the full six innings, allowed three earned runs, five hits and walked none in addition to her 11 strikeouts. She now has 132 strikeouts on the season, which places her fifth in the nation.
Byrd homered, singled twice and drove in four runs, while Baty homered twice and had three RBIs. Baty now has 12 home runs on the year, which ties her for seventh in the nation. Harris doubled twice, while McCrary had two singles.
Daniels singled twice for Holmes, while Little homered. Redd and Kaleia Lillis had singles.
Ard started, went five innings and took the loss. She went five innings, allowed seven runs (six earned) and six hits. Redd tossed 1/3 of an inning, allowed two earned runs and walked two. Karley Poindexter pitched to four batters, giving up three hits and a walk.
