RAYMOND –
Rachel Hayes continues to sparkle for No. 4 Jones County.
The Ocean Springs sophomore righthander tossed a no-hitter to lead JCJC to a 6-0 victory over Hinds in game one here Wednesday afternoon at Rene Warren Field.
Hayes, who has signed with the University of St. Francis (Illinois) struck out six and walked none as she improved to 18-1. Two Hinds' players reached base on errors, as Hayes faced 23 batters – two over the minimum.
JCJC scored all the runs it would need in the first inning.
Kalyn Watts led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on
Cori McCrary's groundout.
Kelly Byrd's groundout scored Watts.
Brittany Baty and
Natalie Hogue walked and
Autumn Frost's single scored Baty and Hayes' single scored Hogue to make it 3-0.
The Lady Bobcats added a run in the second.
Jay Harris led off with a single and stole second. McCrary reached on an error, which allowed Harris to score.
JCJC ended the scoring with two runs in the sixth.
Frost reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner
Skyler McLain. McLain stole second and Hayes followed with a single.
Ashley Valentine's sacrifice fly scored McLain and Hayes scored on a single by Harris.
Watts, Hayes and Harris each had two singles for JCJC, while Byrd, Baty and Frost added singles.
Amberlee Nix went the distance and took the loss. She allowed six runs (three earned), nine hits, walked three and struck out none.
