Hayes leads No. 5 Lady Bobcats past No. 2 Lady Bulldogs

ELLISVILLE – Rachel Hayes excelled again in the circle for the No. 5 Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats.
Rachel Hayes won her 13th game of the season in game one, as JCJC beat No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast 6-0 here Tuesday afternoon in game one at Community Bank Park.
Hayes, a sophomore from Ocean Springs, gave up only three hits, struck out eight and walked one as she improved to 13-1. She now has 112 strikeouts on the season, which is third nationally.
JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Jay Harris reached on an error to start the inning and with one out, Cori McCrary doubled to left. Brittany Baty drove in both runners with a double to right.
The Lady Bobcats added four runs in the fifth.
Kelly Byrd and Baty singled and Natalie Hogue sacrificed the runners. Autumn Frost's sacrifice bunt scored Byrd to make it 3-0. Hayes reached on an error, which allowed Baty to score. Ashley Valentine doubled Hayes home and Kalyn Watts singled to score courtesy runner Brittany Hagwood.
Baty doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs for the Lady Bobcats. Hayes doubled and singled, while Byrd singled twice. McCrary and Valentine had doubles, while Watts and Hogue singled.
Nora Keehn, 7-1, started and took the loss. She went three-plus innings, allowed two runs (none earned), five hits, walked none and struck out none. Kristen Gardner tossed the final three innings, allowed four runs (all earned), six hits, walked one and struck out one.
Deborah Elmore, Izzy Werdann and Alyssa Hardy singled for MGCCC.
