No. 7 Lady Bobcats open season with win over Pensacola St.

ELLISVILLE – Rachel Hayes struck out seven and Kelly Byrd scored three runs to lead 7th-ranked Jones County to a six-inning, 10-2 victory over Pensacola State (Florida) here on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Hayes did not allow a hit until the sixth inning as the Lady Bobcats won their season opener.
JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jessie Bumpous reached on an infield single and Byrd was hit by a pitch. Bumpous scored when Tylesha Davis reached on an error and Byrd later scored on a wild pitch.
It stayed that way until the fifth when Bumpous led off by reaching on an error. Byrd then scorched a double to left to score Bumpous. Byrd would score to make it 4-0 when Autumn Frost hit a hot shot that was misplayed.
Jenna Bobbitt of the Pirates broke up the no-hitter with a single in the single. That followed a walk to Melissa Luis. After Kacie Cahill sacrificed the runners, Hayley Pelkey delivered a two-run single to right.
JCJC ended the game with a six-run, bottom of the sixth inning.
Cori McCrary led off with a bunt single and Jay Harris reached on an error at third base. The ball was thrown away, allowing McCrary to score on the play. Kalyn Watts drove in a run with a bunt single and Byrd drew a walk. Frost reached on an error, which allowed Watts score.
Tylesha Davis reached on an error, which allowed Byrd to score. Natalie Hogue's groundout scored Frost and Hayes had an infield single to score pinch-runner Brittany Hagwood with the game-ending run.
Hayes (1-0) allowed just two hits and walked one.
Byrd doubled and reached base in all four of her at-bats. Bumpous, Watts, Hayes and McCrary added singles.
Erika Greek went the distance and took the loss for the Pirates. She allowed five hits, hit three and walked four. Bobbitt and Pelkey singled.
The Lady Bobcats were to play William Carey University Tuesday night in a game officially classified as an exhibition contest.
JCJC travels to Eunice, Louisiana, for a pair of games on Saturday. The Lady Bobcats meet Cowley County College (Kansas) at noon and 10th-rated LSU-Eunice at 2 p.m.
Pensacola State, 2-4, travels to Jefferson Davis Community College (Alabama) on Friday.
