Hayes tosses no-hitter, strikes out 12 as No. 7 Lady Bobcats triumph

ELLISVILLE – Rachel Hayes tossed a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 12 as No. 7 Jones County Junior College downed Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) 8-0 here Sunday afternoon at Community Bank Park in game one of a doubleheader.
Hayes dominated as she improved to 6-1.
She struck out the side three straight times and had 11 consecutive strikeouts at one point. Only one Bear baserunner reached and that was on an error.
JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Cori McCrary reached on a bunt single and stole second. Kalyn Watts also reached on a bunt single. Jessie Bumpous drove McCrary in with a ground out and Kelly Byrd followed with a run-scoring single.
The Lady Bobcats made it 3-0 in the third when Autumn Frost and Hayes singled. After a fielder's choice, McCrary followed with an RBI single.
JCJC ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth – all with two outs.
Bumpous drew a one-out walk. After a fly ball for the second out, Brittany Baty drilled her third home run of the year. Ashley Valentine followed with her first home run of the season to give JCJC a 6-0 lead.
Frost and Hayes then singled and Jay Harris followed with a run-scoring single. McCrary was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Watts ended the game with a single to left.
Byrd doubled and singled, while Watts, Frost, Hayes and McCrary had two singles each. Baty homered and drove in two runs and Valentine homered.
Taylor Hall went the first 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. She allowed three runs, seven hits, walked one and struck out one. Haley Tassin pitched 1/3 of an inning and Taylor Toledano also pitched for the Bears.
