Bobcats hold off Northeast 67-63 in MACJC Tournament

FULTON – Jones County Junior College was the only team to avoid the upset bug here Monday in the opening round of men's play in the MACJC Tournament.
The Bobcats defeated Northeast Mississippi 67-63 in the day's final game at the Davis Event Center on the campus of Itawamba Community College.
JCJC led for the entire game until the Tigers went ahead 63-62 with 1:13 left on two Wesley Harris free throws.
Tristin Walley then put JCJC up 64-63 with two free throws with 53.4 seconds left. JCJC's Christian Robertson then came up with a steal and Walley missed a shot inside. But Robertson got the rebound and JCJC called timeout with 29.9 seconds left on the game clock and 29 seconds remaining on the shot clock.
The Bobcats got the ball to Zebedee Rice, who was fouled with 21.5 seconds left. Rice missed the first shot, but made the second to put the Bobcats up 65-63.
The Tigers got the ball upcourt and Kendarius Smith missed on a drive to the goal. Walley grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Maurice Dunlap, who was fouled with 1.1 seconds left.
Dunlap hit both free throws and the Bobcats – the South Division's No. 2 team – had survived against the Tigers – the North's No. 3 team.
JCJC will now meet Mississippi Gulf Coast in the semifinals at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bulldogs, the South's No. 4 team, surprised the North's No. 1 team, Holmes, 100-88.
In other games, Southwest, the No. 3 team from the South, beat the North's No. 2 team, Northwest, 86-80. East Mississippi, the North's No. 4 team, upset Pearl River, the top seed from the South, 80-73.
Southwest will meet East Mississippi at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the other men's semifinal game.
The JCJC women's team opens the tournament with an 8 p.m. Tuesday game vs. Holmes.
