ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College outscored Hinds 61-33 in the second half and defeated the Bulldogs 95-68 here Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
With the victory the Bobcats improve to 15-6 overall and end MACJC South Division play tied for first place with Pearl River with a 10-4 record.
Since Pearl River swept JCJC in the regular season, the Wildcats will be the No. 1 seed in the division and the Bobcats will be No. 2 at the state tournament next week at Itawamba.
The Bobcats will play the North's No. 3 team – Northeast Mississippi – at a time to be announced on Monday. The tournament bracket will be released on Friday.
JCJC fell behind early 13-3 and would trail 20-10 midway through the first half vs. Hinds.
The Bobcats would come back and take a 30-28 lead with 3:01 left when
Xavier Howard made two free throws. But the Bulldogs would lead 35-34 at halftime.
JCJC would take the lead for good with 13:44 remaining in the game when
Andre Johnson made a 3-pointer to make it 49-47. With 12:48 left,
Zebedee Rice made a 4-point play to give the Bobcats a 55-47 lead.
A Joshua Skinner 3-pointer with 8:49 remaining got Hinds within 62-55, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get. The Bobcats then went on a 17-6 run and went up 79-61 with 4:36 left on a pair of
Bruce Stevens' free throws.
JCJC's longest lead came at the end of the game when
Emetric Fells got a dunk.
Stevens led JCJC with 18 points, while
Rickey Holden added 14,
Tristin Walley had 11 and
Christian Robertson finished with 10.
Trojuan White led Hinds with 16 points. Bobby Powell added 15 on five 3-pointers.
The Bulldogs end the year at 7-16 overall and 4-10 in the division.
