ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College women's tennis team edged Hinds 5-4 in the season opening match for both squads here Thursday afternoon at the Howard Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
The Lady Bobcats rallied with four wins in singles after Hinds won two doubles matches.
In singles, JCJC got wins from
Madison Currie,
Claire Rounsaville,
April Rudolph and
Breanna Waller.
Currie beat Brittany Weathersby, 6-3, 6-1; Rounsaville downed Rachel Rhett, 6-3, 6-0; Rudolph outlasted Mary Neely Myers, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8; and Waller whipped Chen Elizar, 6-0, 6-1.
Hinds' Mariana Alvarez defeated
Raquel Rodriguez in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and JCJC's
Mattie Mills fell to Sophia Slusasz, 6-4, 6-4.
JCJC's Rudolph and Mills won No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over Slusasz and Elizar.
Alvarez and Rhett beat Rodriguez and Currie in No. 1 doubles, 8-5, and Weathersby and Myers edged Rounsaville and Waller in No. 2 doubles, 9-7.
JCJC's
C.J. King beat Goo Brown 8-4 in an extra singles match.
The Lady Bobcats will travel to Copiah-Lincoln for a 2 p.m. match on Monday. They are scheduled to host East Central in a 2 p.m. match on Feb. 25.
Hinds will host Holmes in a 10 a.m. Saturday match.
