ELLISVILLE –
Rachel Hayes retired the first 20 batters she faced and No. 2 Jones County Junior College hit four home runs as the Lady Bobcats defeated Holmes Community College 6-0 in game one of the best-of-three MACJC playoff series here Friday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC, 38-2, will try to wrap up the series in game two at noon on Saturday. A third game, if necessary, would follow 30 minutes after game two.
Holmes falls to 21-15.
Hayes, 12-1, was never threatened.
She posted nine strikeouts and did not allow a baserunner until a two-out single in the seventh inning by Blair Little.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Kalyn Watts led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on
Tori Dew's single to right.
The Lady Bobcats made it 3-0 in the second when
Rebecca Monceaux doubled and
Hailee Kolwyck followed with a two-run home run to center.
In the third inning,
Lauren Holifield led off with a home run and
Brittany Seale followed with another home run to make it 5-0.
Holifield then blasted another home run in the fourth to end the scoring. Holifield now has 24 home runs on the season, which leads NJCAA Division II.
Holifield had two home runs, while Kolwyck homered and singled. Watts had two singles, Seale homered and
Jay Harris tripled. Monceaux had a double and Dew singled.
Kassey Ard, 11-7, started and took the loss. She pitched two-plus innings, allowed five runs, seven hits, walked one and struck out two. Little pitched the final four innings, allowed one run, three hits, walked one and struck out two.
