Rachel Hayes allowed a leadoff bunt single and then retired the final 18 batters she faced to lead 2
nd-ranked Jones County Junior College to an 8-0, six-inning victory over Southwest Mississippi in game one here Friday evening at Community Bank Park.
A heavy rainstorm immediately after game one forced game two to be postponed because of unplayable field conditions. That game could be played on Wednesday.
The Lady Bobcats, 35-2 overall and 25-2 in MACJC South Division play, are scheduled to travel to Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
JCJC, the MACJC South Division champion, will host the No. 4 team from the North Division in a best-of-three playoff series on April 24-25. Game 1 is set for 4 p.m. on April 24. Game 2 will be played at a time to be determined on April 25 with Game 3, if necessary, to follow 30 minutes after Game 2.
Southwest hosts Mississippi Gulf Coast on Monday.
Hayes, 10-1, allowed a leadoff bunt single to Shaden Miller and that was it. She ended the game with nine strikeouts, including seven in a row at one point.
JCJC took a 3-0 lead in the second when
Lauren Holifield led off with her 21
st home run of the season, a line drive just over the leftfield wall.
Kimberly Nilsson had a one-out single and
Rebecca Monceaux followed with a two-run shot over the right-center field wall.
The Lady Bobcats made it 5-0 in the third.
Tori Dew led off with a single and Holifield followed with an RBI double. Nilsson then singled Holifield home.
JCJC made it 7-0 in the fourth.
Kalyn Watts led off with a bunt single, followed by singles by
Savannah Lyon and Dew to load the bases.
Brittany Seale then delivered a two-run single.
The Lady Bobcats ended it in the sixth.
Dew led off with a walk. Southwest then committed two throwing errors, allowing Dew to advance to third. Holifield and Seale walked to load the bases and Nilsson ended the game with a single.
Holifield homered and doubled, while Nilsson had three singles for JCJC. Monceaux homered, while Watts, Dew and
Hailee Kolwyck had two singles each. Lyon and Seale added singles.
Keely Fortenberry started and took the loss. She went three-plus innings, allowed seven runs, 11 hits, walked none and struck out one. Maddy Teague pitched two innings, allowed one run, three hits, walked four and struck out one.
