Dew, Holifield, Nilsson help No. 1 Bobcats defeat No. 13 MGCCC

ELLISVILLE – Tori Dew hit her second three-run home run of the day to help No. 1 Jones County Junior College to a 7-4 decision over 13th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast in game two of a doubleheader here Monday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Lauren Holifield hit her nation's best 17th home run of the year and Kimberly Nilsson had four hits as JCJC improved to 26-2 overall and 16-2 in the MACJC South Division.
The Lady Bobcats are now 26-2 overall and 16-2 in the MACJC South Division. JCJC travels to Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday.
MGCCC, 28-8 and 13-5, visits East Central on Wednesday.
The game was scoreless until the third.
Kalyn Watts led off with a single and Nilsson followed with a single.
Dew then blasted a three-run home run over the rightfield wall and Holifield followed with a drive over the scoreboard to left to give the Lady Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
JCJC made it 5-0 in the fourth when Jay Harris doubled and scored on a Nilsson single.
MGCCC got on the board when Hannah Melendrez homered to center in the fifth to make it 5-1.
The Lady Bobcats went up 7-1 in the sixth when Nilsson singled for her fourth hit of the game. Dew then tripled her home to make it 6-1. Holifield's single scored Dew.
The Lady Bulldogs made it closer in the seventh.
Alyssa Hardy reached on a bunt single and Catelyn Williams followed with a single. Melendrez then hit her second home run of the game – a three-run shot to center – but MGCCC would get no closer.
Teri Richey, 11-1, went the distance and got the win.
She allowed four runs, six hits, walked one and struck out five.
Nilsson doubled and singled three times, while Dew homered, tripled and drove in four runs. Harris doubled and singled, while Holifield singled twice. Kalyn Watts and Rebecca Monceaux added singles.
Melendrez homered twice and drove in four runs. Katilin Lee, Deborah Elmore, Alyssa Hardy and Williams added singles.
Kristen Gardner started, went three-plus innings and took the loss. She allowed four runs, six hits and walked one. Paige Breal went the final three innings, allowed three runs, six hits, walked two and struck out two.
