Sixth-inning keys No. 1 Lady Bobcats past No. 13 Miss. Gulf Coast

ELLISVILLE – Kayleigh Williams had a pinch-hit, two-run single and Tori Dew blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally top-ranked Jones County Junior College to a 7-3 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College here Monday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader.
JCJC was down 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rebecca Monceaux got a one-out single. With two outs, Savannah Lyon got a bad-hop single to put runners at first and third. Kalyn Watts was then intentionally walked to load the bases.
That brought up Williams, who drilled a single to right to score pinch-runner Jay Harris and Lyon to give JCJC a 4-3 lead.
Dew then followed with a three-run homer to centerfield and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Lady Bobcats had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Holifield singled and Kimberly Nilsson was hit by a pitch. Monceaux followed with an RBI single.
MGCCC tied it in the top of the third when Kaitlin Lee singled, was sacrificed to second by Kamryn Theriot and later scored on Brittney Butler's single.
JCJC came back with a run in the bottom of the third. Shelby Nelson reached on a single and advanced on an error. Dew then followed with an RBI single.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Catelyn Williams led off with a walk, Hannah Melendrez singled and Tabitha Johnson reached on an error to load the bases. Lee's infield hit scored Williams and Deborah Elmore's infield hit scored Johnson.
Rachel Hayes, 5-1, posted the win for JCJC.
She went the distance, allowed three runs (two earned), eight hits, walked two and struck out four.
Dew homered, singled and drove in four runs, while Holifield, Monceaux and Lyon each singled twice. Nelson and Williams added singles.
Lee went the distance and took the loss. She allowed seven runs (six earned), 10 hits, walked two and struck out two.
Lee, Theriot and Elmore had two singles each for MGCCC. Butler and Melendrez each had a single.
JCJC is now 25-2 overall and 15-2 in the MACJC South Division.
Mississippi Gulf Coast falls to 28-7 13-4.
