Two-run first inning keys Southwest to win over No. 1 JCJC

SUMMIT – Southwest Mississippi scored twice in the first inning and made those runs stand up as they defeated top-ranked Jones County Junior College 2-1 here Tuesday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader.
It was the first loss of the season for the Lady Bobcats.
The Lady Bobcats, 23-1 overall and 13-1 in the MACJC South Division, travel to East Central for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. Southwest, 13-13 overall and 3-9 in division play, hosts Meridian on Wednesday.
Shaden Miller reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the first inning and Jessie Penton was hit by a pitch. Jessica Pipkens grounded back to pitcher Rachel Hayes, who got the second out at first base.
Sarah Roberts then delivered a two-run single to left to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead.
JCJC's only run came in the fourth.
Brittany Seale led off with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Shelby Nelson. Kimberly Nilsson followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Shelby Nelson then scored on a passed ball and Nilsson advanced to second.
Rachel Hayes then walked and was replaced by courtesy runner Lindy Tabor. After a fly out and a sacrifice, JCJC had runners at second and third with two outs, but Kalyn Watts flied out to end the inning.
The Lady Bobcats were retired in order in the fifth and sixth. Watts reached on a two-out error in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.
Hayes, 3-1, pitched six innings for JCJC and took the loss. She allowed two runs (none earned), five hits, walked none and struck out five.
Nilsson singled twice for JCJC, while Karla Santiago doubled. Watts, Tori Dew and Seale added singles.
Macy Fulton went the distance and posted the victory. She allowed one earned run, six hits, walked one and struck out three.
Austin Pruitt and Roberts had two singles each for Southwest and Penton had one single.
