ELLISVILLE –
Kayleigh Williams went the distance, allowing just two hits, while
Tori Dew and
Lauren Holifield each homered as top-rated Jones County Junior College defeated Pearl River 5-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC took charge quickly.
Kalyn Watts was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning and was sacrificed to second by
Rebecca Monceaux.
Dew then crushed a home run to center to make it 2-0. Holifield followed with a single,
Brittany Seale walked and
Kimberly Nilsson followed with a run-scoring single to make it 3-0.
PRCC got on the board in the second inning when Brooke Roberts led off with a double, took third on a ground out and scored on Branda Northrop's bunt groundout.
The Lady Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth with a single, a walk and an error, but Williams retired pinch-hitter Briana Leonard on a fly ball to center to end the threat.
JCJC closed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
Holifield led off with a home run and Seale followed with a walk. With two outs,
Tylesha Davis delivered an RBI double.
Williams, 7-0, gave up the two hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out five.
Holifield homered and singled, while Dew homered and Davis doubled. Watts and Nilsson added singles.
Skylar Cook went five innings and took the loss. She allowed five earned runs, six hits, walked three and struck out one. Danielle Barton pitched one inning, allowed no hits and hit a batter.
Roberts doubled and Northrop singled for PRCC's hits.
