FULTON – No. 4 Jones College watched two wins slip away in walk-off fashion against Itawamba at Roy Cresap Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats fell 11-10 in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run, walk-off home run in the opener and, 4-3, on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to drop both.
Jones fell to 34-15 overall, 17-9 in the MACCC and slipped into a three-way tie for third. ICC improved to 30-17, 17-9 in conference play.
Jones hosts No. 18 Northwest on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale, needing a sweep and some help from a few other teams in order to host one of two, four-team regional spots.
Itawamba 11, Jones 10
The opener turned into a back-and-forth slugfest that ended with a crushing swing.
Jones jumped out early when
Dylan Champagne delivered an RBI-single in the first, then broke things open in the third on Champagne's two-run homer for a 3-1 lead.
The Bobcats appeared in control in the fourth, stringing together three runs behind a two-run single from
Warren Hutchinson and an RBI double from
Chase Russell to make it 6-2.
But momentum quickly shifted.
Itawamba capitalized on a Jones error in the bottom of the fourth and Brody Thompson hit a two-run homer in the inning to cut the lead to 6-5. The Indians kept applying pressure, tying the game in the fifth on a solo shot by Tre Gunn before taking the lead in the sixth with back-to-back home runs — including another from Thompson — to go up 8-6.
After scratching across a run in the eighth, the Bobcats delivered a dramatic rally in the ninth.
Gage Reeves blasted a two-run homer to tie the game and
Eli Wheat followed with a pinch-hit, go-ahead solo shot to give Jones a 10-9 lead and needing three outs for victory.
But the celebration didn't last.
A leadoff double, passed ball, wild pitch, and then — fittingly — Thompson again. The Itawamba slugger launched his fourth home run of the game, a walk-off two-run shot to left, sealing an 11-10 comeback win.
Thompson's four homers powered a 15-hit attack for the Indians. Houston Green earned the win in relief, while
Canyon Reeves took the loss.
Itawamba 4, Jones 3
The nightcap followed a similar script, only tighter.
Jones struck first in the third inning with RBIs from Russell and
Sanders Ainsworth to build a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats had chances to extend it but couldn't capitalize, leaving runners in scoring position in multiple innings.
That opened the door for Itawamba in the fifth.
With two aboard,
Drew Lambert exited the game with a 2-0 lead and 3-0 count to Reid Kent.
Cooper Rayburn then walked Madden Butler to put the go-ahead run at the plate and Cannon Graham turned the game around with a three-run homer to center, flipping a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead in one swing.
Jones answered in the seventh. After a leadoff triple from
Brayden Quick,
Kelan Guidry lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score pinch-runner
Brady Smith to tie the game at 3-3.
But for the second straight game, Itawamba had the final say.
A leadoff walk and a double from Butler plated the winning run, completing the walk-off sweep.
