ELLISVILLE – Jones College started an 11-0 run late in the first quarter and went on to smother Hinds, 96-65, in the MACCC-opener here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Bobcats, 12-2 overall, 1-0 MACCC, were down 20-19 when
Jakera Ducksworth (West Jones) made a 3-pointer to give them the lead for good at 22-20 with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
A Ducksworth layup at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter capped the run and gave Jones a 30-20 lead.
The Bobcats would then roll to a 54-30 advantage at halftime and an 80-46 lead after three quarters. Their largest lead came with 2:31 left when
Anna-Patrice Patterson (Bay Springs) scored to make it 95-58.
Lamarah Cleaves (Tupelo) led five players in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ducksworth added 14,
Zharia Leflore (Neshoba Central) added 12 and
Larissa Hubbard (Harrison Central) and
Sanyla Smith (Tupelo) had 10 each.
Hubbard had eight rebounds and four assists, while Leflore finished with seven steals.
Jones outscored Hinds 50-24 on points in the paint, 28-18 off turnovers, 18-8 off fastbreaks and 37-17 off the bench.
The Bobcats shot 45 percent, including 26-of-31 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 42 percent from the field but just 2-of-13 from 3-point range.
Jakira Brown led Hinds with 17 points. Mariah Heard had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Jones held a 50-33 rebounding advantage and had 16 assists compared to 12 for Hinds. The Bobcats committed 20 turnovers, but the Bulldogs finished with 26.
