RAYMOND – A pair of quality starts from
Josh Lee and
Andrew Marble lifted No. 6 Jones to a doubleheader sweep of Hinds Tuesday afternoon at Joe G. Moss Field.
Lee allowed three runs over 6.2 innings and punched out eight and Marble tossed a season-high 6.0 innings allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Jones improved to 19-6, 5-1 in the MACCC while Hinds fell to 6-18, 0-4 in league play.
The Bobcats have won five straight in the series after losing five of the previous seven.
Jones heads to Booneville on Saturday, March 22 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Northeast. Links to live video and stats can be accessed via jcbobcats.com.
Jones 11, Hinds 9
Leading 10-2 after six, Jones had to hang on over the final three frames as Hinds rallied for seven runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Colton Smith and
J.T. Elias gave up three runs each in relief of Lee before
Coleman Capaci came on with one out in the ninth to get his first collegiate save.
Chase Russell's RBI-groundout put Jones on the board in the first.
The lead was 2-0 in the third after a
Gage Reeves RBI-double scored
Cole Manuel after he reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Evan Rogers' two-run homer in the fourth and a handful of wild pitches opened up a 9-2 lead after five.
Braden Smith's team-leading sixth home run, to lead off the eighth, extended the lead to 11-3.
But Hinds would climb back in it with three in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI-double, single and fielder's choice.
Trailing 11-6 in the bottom of the ninth, a one-out walk was followed by a two-run homer from Aiden Swales. A double and RBI-single from Takorre Clowers got it within 11-9.
Capaci would get a groundout to close things out with the tying run at the plate.
Rogers, Smith, Reeves and
Brice Ainsworth all had multiple hits in the win.
Jones 11, Hinds 3
There would be no late comeback in this one.
TJ Dunsford was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Jones capitalized off seven Eagle walks and six hit-by-pitches.
Marble allowed three runs in the first two innings but hung four straight zeros before giving way to
Caden Freeman.
Hinds scored in the first on a sac fly, but Jones immediately responded with four in the top of the second on RBI-singles from
Talan Theriot and Rogers.
The Eagles cut it to 4-3 after two but wouldn't score again. Jones took advantage of all the Eagle miscues to score seven unanswered to close out a sweep.
Bryson Jones had a pinch-hit single, Manuel had two hits and Theriot two hits.
