Bobcats close out four-game sweep of Baton Rouge

ELLISVILLE – A one-hitter from the Bobcat pitching staff in Monday's doubleheader opener and a team-leading fourth home run from Braden Smith in the nightcap helped No. 12 Jones close out a home-and-home sweep of Baton Rouge.

Jones improved to 10-2 and has won five straight overall.

The Bobcats head to Perkinston Wednesday for a round robin. They'll play MGCCC at 11 a.m., followed by No. 5 Pearl River at 2 o'clock. Both are scheduled for nine innings.

Jones 3, Baton Rouge 1

Cole Manuel allowed an unearned run on one hit and Micah Daniell threw three shutout for his first collegiate save in a quick first game.

A Chase Russell groundout and RBI-single from Br. Smith gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead in the first.

A one-out single allowed by Manuel in the second was the only hit allowed in the game. Shawn Driggers struck out but reached first on a passed ball which allowed BRCC to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Manuel helped his cause on the mound with a sac fly in the third to make it 3-1.

Daniell struck out two and walked two and didn't allow a hit to earn a three-inning save.

Jones 8, Baton Rouge 3

Jones pounced on BRCC for four runs in the first and Andrew Marble punched out eight in 3.2 innings to close out a doubleheader sweep.

Manuel hit a two-run double and Br. Smith a two-run homer to make it 4-0 after one.

Marble and Coleman Capaci kept the Bears off the board until the sixth when they threatened to take the lead.

Colton Smith entered to start the inning and the first three batters reached. A passed ball, groundout, wild pitch and a pair of walks quickly cut the deficit to 4-3.

Caden Freeman inherited two baserunners with two outs, walked the first he faced and then got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to preserve the lead.

Jones scored four runs on two hits and two Bear errors in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead back to 8-3. Talan Theriot's RBI-single made it 6-3 and two scored on Dominick Regira's sac bunt and throwing error.

Freeman struck out two and got a lineout to end the game for his third save.
